CLIENTELE | Are We a Fit For You?

In our pursuit to accomplish our Mission within the context of its Vision and Values, we have determined that there are generally three types of clients:

  1. Do-it-yourselfers
  2. Collaborators; and
  3. Delegators

DO-IT-YOURSELFERS

Do-it-yourselfers write their own plans, conduct their own research, make their own computations, and set up their own accounts-they’re like a one-man-band of finances. They are better off on their own if they simply don’t want to work with someone else. Or if they enjoy managing their money a great deal and are capable of doing so, it could make sense, though not necessarily. Of course, if they don’t trust anybody to help them or feel that they must have absolute control at all times, they’ll have to do it themselves.

COLLABORATORS

Collaborators want to do it themselves, but they also want a relationship with a professional so they’ll have someone to lean on for information and occasionally for advices. Some want an advisor to educate them, and confirm their own research. The Collaborator tries to balance the control of a Do-it-yourselfer with the peace of mind of a Delegator, and uses professional support as a safety net.

DELEGATORS

Delegators comprise an entirely different breed. They differentiate what they can confidently hand off to someone else from what they must take care of themselves. They are not remotely interested in doing the research and strategizing, although most could do it if they wanted to. As complex as financial planning can be, just about anyone could do it. Delegators choose not to because they believe they benefit from the value of a Trusted Advisor provides: to free them from having to worry about their money so they can focus on other, more important things in life. They are do-it-yourselfers only in the realm where it counts: family, friends, career, physical health, spiritual life. Otherwise, they are happy to pay competent professionals to do the rest.

One online trading company’s commercial featured a classic Do-it-yourselfer sitting on a dock in front of his yacht and reciting his mantra: “Why would I pay some else to do what I can do for myself?” Indeed, why? The Do-it-yourselfer and Collaborators have found an ally in companies like E*TRADE-these discount online brokers can provide valuable information to the person who has the time and inclination to seek it out.

But the Delegator has an answer to that question: “I pay someone else to manage my money so I can do all the things I can’t pay someone else to do: exercise, go to my kid’s soccer games, spend quiet time at home, take vacations, grow personally, improve my professional skills, enjoy my retirement, volunteer my time to worthy causes, meditate, read great books, have dinner with friends.” The Delegator’s mantra: “Why would I do anything myself that I could pay someone else to do?”

We have chosen to work only with Delegators. That way we can focus all of our time and energy making sure that you stay on track to accomplish your goals for the reasons that are important to you.
